Wide Open Sound : News

September 2004

After three months of hard work, the Dave Page record has reached its completion. Mixed this month at WOS by Kieran Wagner, it will also feature three songs recorded and mixed by Grant Rutledge at Montana Studio in 2003. The mastering process was deftly handled by Bill McElroy at Slipped Disc, and the album, titled Stand Up, is currently being pressed by the capable folks at DiscMakers. Also in September, Corby Faye was in with Kieran wrapping up some final tracking for his The Baron Looks Down project. Bob Anderson, formerly of River City High, also came in this month to transfer and edit a solo project between far-flung gigs with Something Corporate.

The Dave Page project has been careening headlong towards its completion this month. Randy Savage (Corby Faye, The Meek) has lent his stellar guitar chops to the record, and The Lyric String Quartet came in to put some icing on three songs. The results are testimony to the fact that samples just don't do strings justice. In my book, you either hire real string players, or you get yourself a Mellotron. The record, produced by Dave Page and Kieran Wagner, should be out by early October. Also this month, Delayne Chowen was in to demo a new song on the grand piano with Kieran at the board. In other news, the power supply in the digi-002rack decided to die just as the Memorial Day weekend was winding up.... in Digidesign's defense however, they did overnight us a new one in order to avoid any downtime. Who says you have to buy an HD rig to be treated with respect...

July 2004

Check this out: WOS is lowering its rates. Yep, gotta do it... seems there's a whole slew of audio people out there who are willing to work for nothing. Wish that would happen with carmakers or something. A couple of other recent changes... we've just upgraded to Digidesign's digi-002rack and put new tubes in the Leslie. We've also acquired a spiffy new guitar stand.

In the studio this month, Dave Page has continued work on his album at a fairly brisk pace. The songs, some of which are quite epic, are definitely filling-out. String parts are being written at the moment and there's talk of a gospel choir (...we've already tracked the kitchen sink, though). Trey Moyer came in to work on a few tracks for an album he has been making with Grant Rutledge. The talented and affable Adrian Duke was hired to play the Hammond. Also, Corby Faye dropped in for some editing chores on his The Baron Looks Down project, dragging it kicking and screaming towards a light at the end of some sort of tunnel.

June 2004

WOS has been a veritable hive of activity this month. Kieran has kept busy with the Dave Page record and various Mt. Olivet overdubs.... both projects have been putting our sweet-sounding Hammond organ to good use. Local classical trio Windsong came to WOS and performed beautifully for their CD. Kieran handled the recording. Grant Rutledge and Gameshow Hero were in tracking drums for an upcoming album.

Our AMEK desk has been receiving a great deal of TLC from tech Jeremy Miller this month, much to the appreciation of the engineers who use it regularly. The old girl is looking and sounding quite spry as a result...

Singer Gaylen Clarke was in this month with producer Ron Fitzgerald for an upcoming independent release. Grant Rutledge recorded and mixed the project at WOS. Kieran began work on a couple of new projects in May, including singer/songwriter Dave Page's self-produced debut solo album and a gospel record for Mt. Olivet church. Producer/arranger Barry Reed jr. is heading up the Mt. Olivet project...mixing should begin in June. Local punk band Down To Nothing recorded and mixed four songs for their soon to be released EP. Gary Longest was at the helm.

April 2004

April saw the completion of our live-room renovations. Tom and Dave McCormack (of alt-country band Meanflower) brought their considerable skills to the project, and the room looks, and more importantly, sounds awesome. For those of you who have worked here before, it'll feel like the room had a shower!

Rachel Leyco recently finished mixing Something Human at WOS. The record is due out in May and was engineered and co-produced by Grant Rutledge. Corby Faye was in with Kieran to record some vocals for his debut record, The Baron looks Down. Kieran also mixed R&B group Currency's single, Quality Time, featuring singer Dwayne Folks, while continuing work on Meanflower's upcoming release,Goodbye to a River.
